Sofia and the Bullfrog's Secret Smile

Sofia skipped into the forest glade, spotting Max sitting alone, scowling at a frog in the grass. She bravely sat nearby and asked, "Max, why do you like telling jokes that make people sad?" Max shrugged, picking at his shoelaces, pretending not to hear. Sofia noticed how tense he looked, the sharp smell of earth mixing with the sweet scent of spring flowers around them.
When Max made a mean face, Sofia only smiled and asked, "Do you ever feel funny inside after being mean?" For a moment, Max looked surprised, his frown fading. He mumbled, "Sometimes… I guess." The cool wind rustled the leaves, carrying the quiet of his answer to Sofia’s open ears.
Sofia gently passed Max a shiny pebble. “Were you ever scared of being left out?” she asked softly. Max gripped the pebble and nodded, tears prickling in his eyes. The forest seemed to hush around them, watching, as a bird sang a single, sweet note.
"I just didn’t want to feel alone," Max whispered, clutching the pebble as Sofia scooted closer. Sofia replied, "We don’t have to be alone anymore." As they both smiled, the frog hopped between them, and laughter bubbled up, brighter than the sunlight. Their fears softened, replaced by the glow of a brand new friendship.
