The Anniversary Rescue
Starring Justin, Val, Mochi
Justin and Val celebrate their tenth anniversary aboard a rocketship orbiting Saturn, toasting with star-cider while reminiscing about their adventures together. Their romantic evening takes a dangerous turn when they spot Mochi, their Bernedoodle, floating helplessly in space, prompting Justin to attempt a daring spacewalk rescue. Through courage and teamwork, they save Mochi and return home, where the warmth of shared pancakes proves that the best adventures are simply being together.
The rocket hums as Justin steers toward Saturn's glittering rings. Val hums her steadying tune, fingers brushing the wavy silver necklace that Justin gave her on their first anniversary. "Ten years," she smiles, "and I still get butterflies."
They land on a silvery moon where the sky is painted with Saturn's giant golden rings arching overhead. Floating inside the cabin, they clink glasses filled with bubbling star-cider that tastes like cinnamon and peaches. "To us," Justin says, pushing his aviators up his nose, "and to every adventure still waiting."
Through the round window, the rings shimmer like a harp made of ice and light. Val points at a shooting star and laughs about the time they got lost hiking and found a hidden waterfall. Justin recalls how she talked to the squirrels while he built a shelter, and they both grin at the memory of muddy boots and victory.
Outside, the silence of space feels cozy rather than lonely because they are together. Justin spins slowly in zero gravity, showing off a sock-slide move from their hallway races back home. Val catches him, her curls floating like seaweed, and they float there holding hands, counting reasons they make a good team.
Suddenly, Val gasps. Past the window floats a small bundle of black, white, and brown fur with a red bandana covered in yellow flowers tumbling end over end. "Mochi!" they shout together. The puppy spins silently, her paws paddling at nothing, drifting farther from the ship with every heartbeat.
Justin grabs his orange helmet. "I'm going out there," he says, his voice steady but his hands fast as he seals his suit. Val checks the tether twice, her fingers trembling but precise, because helping means staying calm even when your heart pounds like a drum.
Justin launches from the airlock, drifting through the diamond-dust of space. He reaches Mochi just as she floats past a chunk of ice, scooping her against his chest and clicking the safety line to his suit. Val reels them in, her arms shaking as she pulls the airlock closed and the three of them collapse into a floating, furry hug.
Back home, gravity feels heavy but good. The kitchen smells like butter and maple syrup as Justin flips pancakes while Mochi drools hopefully from her dog bed. Val sets three plates—one for each of them—and outside the window, the morning sun rises instead of Saturn's rings, but the warm feeling is exactly the same.
