The Tinkly Bell and the Big-Shadow Couch

Starring Alice
“Ding-ding!” Alice giggled as her fingers brushed the cool, shiny bell. It slipped away and rolled under the couch, which made the space look dark and secret. She hugged her toy of colorful shapes, eyes wide, and whispered, “Bell, come back!”
She crawled closer, but her knee bumped the couch, and the bell rolled deeper, which made the shadows seem bigger. “Uh-oh,” she breathed, feeling tiny flutters in her tummy. Mama knelt beside her and said, “Let’s make a light helper,” holding a small mirror to shine a beam under the couch.
The light showed the bell, but blocks were in the way, and when Alice nudged them, they clacked and pushed the bell farther. Her eyes watered, and time felt slow. Mama whispered, “New plan,” and together they made a soft sweeper—tape and a clean sock on a wooden spoon—to reach gently.
Alice slid the soft sweeper under the couch while Mama steadied a corner, and—tickle, scoop—she caught the bell! “Ding-ding!” sang the room, and relief bloomed warm. After putting the blocks back together, Alice set the bell on the sunny sill, where tiny shadows looked small and friendly again.
