Starring Shubu, Sofia, Sleepy Slime, Alice

The red kite is stuck on the very top branch. Shubu taps his many bandages and whispers, “I’m scared of boo boos.” Sofia points up gently. “We can do this together.” The leaves smell peppery, and the bark feels rough under Shubu’s fingers, so he decides to try.

To plan his climb, Shubu studies light patches on the trunk, mapping which branches look strong. “Shiny spots, step spots,” he says. Sofia tips her silver tiara to flash a bright dot on the next branch, so Shubu aims there and starts up slowly.

A thin branch cracks, and Shubu scrapes his knee. “Ow! New boo boo,” he winces, losing time and courage. Sleepy Slime hums a slow lullaby murmur, which steadies his breathing, and Sofia marks a safer branch with another flash, so Shubu chooses a stronger route.

At last, he reaches the highest branch and frees the tangled kite. Cheers rise from below, which makes Shubu beam and forget his fear. “You did it!” Sofia calls, tying the kite string snugly to his wrist so the wind tugs him proud and tall.

Feeling brave, Shubu thinks, “If the kite can lift me, I can fly!” He leaps from a lower branch to catch more wind. But he is too heavy, so the line dips, and he tumbles down, bumping the soft grass and earning another little boo boo.

Everyone hurries over. Sleepy Slime offers a tiny sleepy snack that smells like warm vanilla, which eases the sting. “Thank you,” Shubu whispers, eyes drooping as Sofia straightens the knot and Alice shares a crumb. The cost of the fall is real, so they rest together on the cool grass.

Sleep drifts in, and Shubu dreams of safe steps and steady branches. When he wakes in his bed, the kite rests by the window, and a half-eaten cookie from Alice waits on his blanket. He smiles, touching his bandages. “I’m brave,” he says, “and ready for new adventures—one smart step at a time.”

Later, Shubu meets his friends under the oak to return the kite to the sky, this time keeping feet on the ground. They chart wind with ribbon and shadows, and everyone holds the string together. Laughter lifts like the kite, which makes the day feel brave and bright for all.
