Starring Silly Baboon

Silly Baboon heard a deep rumble roll through the trees, like distant drums under the ground. Leaves trembled, and the air smelled smoky and sweet, like roasted palm nuts. “Uh-oh,” he whispered, feeling brave and a little wobbly. He decided to find out who was coming, so he headed toward the sound.

On the path, Auntie Mango tapped her shell-clicking stick and said, “An ape tribe is marching.” Silly’s tummy flipped, but he puffed his chest. He pulled out his banana-leaf kazoo and hummed, “Bop-bop, banana bop,” to call his friends to stay calm. The steady buzz made him feel braver, so he kept walking.

At the river bend, the Drum Ape Scouts appeared, and behind them strode Chief Thumpa. Wanting peace, Silly set out a mat of yellow bananas and sang, “Bop-bop, banana bop,” through the kazoo. The apes traded looks and gripped their drums, which made Silly realize they might think it was a challenge song. His heart thumped like a bongo.

To show he meant fun, Silly tossed a banana boomerang in a smooth arc. “Catch and share!” he called. It landed with a gentle plop near Chief Thumpa’s toes, which made the Scouts pound a warning beat. Silly gulped; his plan was slipping like a peel.

The drums changed—boom-boom… pause… boom—like thirsty footsteps. Silly pinched his nose and tasted dust in the air; the apes’ canteens hung empty. “You’re not here to fight,” he said softly. “You’re looking for water.” Chief Thumpa blinked, surprised, and the Scouts’ sticks lowered a little.

Silly changed his plan fast. He hummed a new tune on his kazoo, “Bip-bip, water drop,” and waved for them to follow. Because the beat matched their drums, the apes marched with him to a hidden spring under a curtain of vines. Cool mist kissed their faces as water bubbled up bright and clear.

Chief Thumpa knelt to drink, then thumped a gentle thank-you beat. Silly grinned and tied banana leaves to a stick, making a bright banner. “No more scares,” he said. They tapped a friendly rhythm together, which turned the worry into wobbling giggles.

By sunset, Auntie Mango arrived with sweet fruit, and everyone shared a Banana Truce Feast. Silly led one last chant—“Bop-bop, friendship bop!”—and the apes answered with happy drums. Because he listened and changed plans, the tribe stayed safe and made new friends. The banner waved above them like a leafy moon.
