Starring Arnold

Arnold noticed Benny sitting alone on the playground, kicking gravel into little piles. While most kids avoided him, Arnold felt a tug of curiosity. Benny always scowled, but today his eyes looked sad.

“Hey Benny,” Arnold called gently, approaching with a friendly wave. Benny glared but didn’t say anything. The air was cool, and a soft breeze ruffled the fallen leaves beneath their feet.

Arnold plopped down beside Benny, letting their knees almost touch. He offered a stick of bright red bubblegum, grinning. "Why do you always sit by yourself?" Arnold asked quietly.

Benny frowned and mumbled, “Because no one wants to hang out with me.” He squished the bubblegum wrapper nervously. Arnold chewed thoughtfully, “Or maybe you’re just waiting for someone to brave your monster face.”

Benny cracked a tiny smirk, caught off guard. Arnold nudged him. “Is it fun scaring people? Or just easier than not being scared yourself?” The silence felt big, but Benny didn't move away.

“I’m not scared!” Benny blurted, but his voice wobbled. Arnold shrugged, picking up a pebble and tossing it. "Sometimes, I get scared too. But I ask questions to figure things out."

"What kinds of things make you laugh?" Arnold poked gently. Benny blinked, thinking. "Fart noises," he finally muttered, and Arnold burst into giggles, making Benny grin wider.

"Sometimes jokes hurt," Arnold said softly. "Do you laugh because it's silly, or to hide?" Benny bit his lip, glancing away. Underneath his tough look, his eyes were shiny with thought.

"I don’t like being alone," Benny whispered, voice barely more than a sigh. Arnold nodded and placed a hand on his shoulder. "You don’t have to be."

Arnold stood and held out his hand. "Wanna join the game?" After a moment’s pause, Benny grabbed his bag and stood up too. For the first time, a real smile flickered across his face.

They ran toward the group, sneakers thumping and laughter starting to bubble up. Arnold called, "Got room for two more?" The other kids waved them over, curiosity in their eyes.

As the game began, Arnold caught Benny’s eye and grinned. Benny grinned back, his heart lighter than it had been in a long time. Together, they played until the sky turned the color of bubblegum and dreams.
