Sofia and the Curious Case of the Bashful Bully

Sofia tiptoed through the leafy forest, searching for fun, when a rock zipped past her feet. She spotted Max, the class bully, scowling by a mossy tree. Sofia didn’t run away. Instead, she asked gently, “Max, why do you always throw things—does it make things fun for you, or does it help keep people away?” Max only shrugged, but his eyes flickered with surprise.

Max mumbled, "Maybe it’s just funny." But Sofia tilted her head and smiled. "But do you ever laugh? Or are you just waiting to see if someone else gets mad first?" Max looked down at his shoes, the wind rustling the branches above. For a second, his tough shell seemed to thin.

"Do you ever get lonely, sitting behind trees and watching?" Sofia asked softly. The corners of Max's mouth quivered, and he whispered, “Sometimes.” The forest seemed to hush, only bird calls filling the silence. Sofia scooted closer and grinned, “I’d rather have you as a friend than a rock-thrower.”

Max took a shaky breath, then awkwardly held out his hand. "Can I try being your friend instead?" he asked. Sofia beamed and squeezed his hand, and they laughed together as a gentle breeze carried the scent of pine cones and new beginnings. From that day on, Max traded his wall of bravado for a real friend’s embrace.
