Val discovers a half-eaten banana in the garden and becomes convinced a wild animal left it behind. As she searches for clues and builds a trap, her older brother Leo reveals the surprising truth—it was him all along. Val learns that jumping to conclusions can lead to silly mistakes, and sometimes the simplest answer is the right one.

Val skipped through the garden after breakfast. She spotted something yellow near the tomato plants. "A banana!" she gasped. But someone—or something—had already taken big bites out of it.

Val's heart raced. "An animal must have dropped it!" she whispered. She looked around carefully, searching for paw prints or fur. The grass felt damp and cool under her knees as she crawled closer to investigate.

"I'll catch whoever did this," Val decided. She ran inside and grabbed a cardboard box, some string, and a fresh banana. After setting up her trap near the flower bed, she hid behind the rain barrel to watch and wait.

Minutes felt like hours. Val's legs started to ache. A butterfly landed on the box, but no mysterious animal appeared. "Where are you?" she muttered, swatting at a tickly fly buzzing near her ear.

Suddenly, her older brother Leo walked through the garden gate. "Val, what are you doing?" he asked, laughing. Val pointed at the half-eaten banana. "Someone took bites! I'm catching the animal!" she explained proudly.

Leo's smile grew wider. "That was MY banana," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was eating it out here this morning, but it tasted weird, so I left it by the tomatoes and forgot about it."

Val's cheeks turned pink. "Oh," she said quietly, then giggled. "I guess I should have asked first!" Leo helped her take down the trap, and they shared the fresh banana from the box while sitting on the garden steps.

Later, Val carefully placed the old banana peel in the compost bin. She looked at the tomato plants and smiled, remembering her big mystery. Sometimes the answer isn't wild animals—it's just your brother forgetting his snack.
