In a busy city, Benny the dog finds Twig the scared squirrel who is lost from his tall sycamore. After a mistake that dents their trust, they solve problems together using scents, simple maps, and clever tools. Their new friendship grows as they bravely find the way home.

Benny sniffed the sidewalk that smelled like warm bread and rain. A tiny voice squeaked, "Help!" so he turned. A small squirrel trembled by a trash can. "I’m Twig," she said, hugging her fluffy tail.

"I’m lost," Twig whispered. "My tree is the tall sycamore in Sun Patch Park." Benny nodded because he could help. "Let’s follow nut smells and dry-leaf sounds," he said, and his nose twitched.

They followed the scent, so they reached a snack cart. Popcorn spilled, which made Benny dash after bouncing kernels. Twig squeaked in fear and zipped into an alley. Trust felt wobbly, like a loose lid.

Benny stopped and drooped. "I’m sorry," he said, ears low. Because he wanted to fix it, he set bottle caps and nut shells into arrow shapes, and he chirped softly, "Chit-chit—safe." Twig peeked out and nodded a little.

They followed the arrows back to the main street, but rain began. Drops washed the smells and smeared their signs, so the trail was gone. Twig’s whiskers drooped, and Benny’s heart felt heavy.

Benny listened hard and sniffed the wet air. He noticed a bell near the park and a tall gate reflected in puddles, so he made a new plan. "Follow the shiny puddles with the gate shape," he said. Twig took a brave breath.

They reached the open square, but a hawk’s shadow spun above. Twig froze, and the space to the tree felt huge. Benny grabbed a bright umbrella by its handle and popped it open, so they had moving cover. Together they hurried under the sycamore canopy.

Twig’s family chattered from the branches, which made the air feel warm. "You fixed it," Twig said, sharing a tiny acorn treat with Benny. He left the umbrella at the roots and one shiny cap arrow pointing home. City sounds hummed softly, and new friends rested under the big, kind tree.
