Sofia and the Bullfrog's Burrowed Heart

Starring Sofia
Sofia wandered into the schoolyard, spotting Max by the wall, scowling as he kicked at pebbles. She remembered how he'd made other kids cry, but today, she felt a spark of curiosity instead of fear. "Hey Max," Sofia called softly, "do you ever get tired of being alone over here?" Max shrugged, a frown flickering across his face as the rough brick wall pressed cold against his back.
Days went by, and Sofia kept asking Max new questions, each one like a small pebble tossed into a deep pond. "Why do you laugh when someone falls down?" she wondered aloud, offering a half-smile. Max made a weird face, as if tasting something sour, but stayed quiet, the wind ruffling his hair. The playground echoed with shouts and giggles, but between Sofia and Max, there was only a thoughtful hush.
One afternoon, Max surprised Sofia by whispering, "It’s easier to make people laugh than to let anybody see I’m scared." His eyes darted away, but a hint of relief softened his face. Sofia nodded, her warm eyes offering comfort as she gently said, "Everybody gets scared sometimes, even princesses." The air smelled of fresh-cut grass and possibilities.
From then on, Max sat with Sofia at every recess, his laughter lighter, his eyes brighter. One day, as a butterfly fluttered close, Max gave Sofia a quick, clumsy hug, grinning. Sofia hugged him back, feeling his shaky arms grow steadier. The old fear seemed to melt away, and both knew a new friendship had begun.
