Johnny Falcon dreams of flying to the Great Cloud Tree, but his frantic flapping only leads to tumbles and twigs. After watching a dandelion seed float effortlessly on the breeze, he learns that patience and timing are stronger than force. With newfound wisdom, Johnny waits for the warm air to lift him, soaring higher than ever to reach the treetop, and brings home a fluffy reminder that gentle persistence wins the sky.

Johnny watched the big falcons circle the Great Cloud Tree. "I want to go up there," he chirped. He flapped his speckled wings and jumped. Plop. He landed in the grass.

Johnny tried again. He flapped fast. Faster! His yellow feet left the ground, but then—whoosh—he tumbled into a prickly bush. "Ouch," he squeaked. His chest feathers were full of twigs.

Mama Falcon glided down. "Flying high takes waiting," she said. "Wait for the lift." Johnny shook his head. "I don't want to wait!" He jumped from the bush and crashed again.

Johnny sat on a fence post. His wings felt heavy. A dandelion seed floated past his beak, riding the air like a tiny elevator. It went up without flapping at all. Johnny's eyes grew wide.

Johnny climbed to High Rock. The wind howled and pulled at his feathers. His talons gripped the stone. "What if I fall?" he whispered. He remembered the seed, floating so easy and light.

Johnny waited. The warm air tickled his wings. Now! He pushed off the rock and spread his wings wide. The wind caught him like a hammock. Up, up, up he went!

Johnny touched down on the Great Cloud Tree. The branches swayed. Below, he could see the winding river and his own tiny nest. "I did it," he breathed. The air smelled like rain and pine.

Johnny flew home slowly. A dandelion seed stuck to his claw, floating along with him. He showed Mama. "See? I brought a friend," he grinned. "And I waited for the lift."
