Three-Count Tiptoe and the Shiny Hat

Starring Silly Baboon

Silly Baboon headed to the onion stand, where a silly cheetah bobbed up and flipped him a small sack of peanuts with a splash.

Before he got to three, a breeze whooshed, and the hat rolled off the stump into the shade. “Hey!” he yelped, so he sketched a quick map on a banana leaf to follow it. Mina the Meerkat popped up and said, “Maps help when shiny stuff runs.”

They followed a bright glimmer and a faint peppermint smell, which led to a muddy stream. Silly hopped rocks too fast, slipped, and splashed Mina’s scarf. She frowned, and they lost time wiping mud, so he said, “I’m sorry. I’ll go slow.”

Because he slowed down, Mina shared a clue: “Shiny things hide in light spots.” They watched sun-dots flicker and found the hat perched on an anthill guarded by jewel-bright beetles. Silly counted, “One… two…” and the beetles clicked like tiny drums.

At “three,” he touched the brim, and the hat sprang open with tinkly music, skittering downhill toward the village path. Ribbons spilled out, which made a colorful mess. Tiko the Tortoise gasped, “My parade hat!” and his spectacles wobbled.

Hearing the music, Silly realized light made the hat dart faster, so he made a new plan. “We’ll use shade,” he said. Mina lifted a big leaf to cast a shadow, and he counted softly, “One, two, three,” before cupping the hat and tucking the ribbons back.

Because Silly fixed the ribbons and waited for three, Tiko smiled and said, “Would you place it for me?” Silly set the hat on Tiko’s head and added jungle flowers in a careful map pattern. Drums thumped, and neighbors cheered, which filled Silly’s chest with warm fizz.

After the parade, Silly spotted a tiny glittering pin but chose to count to three and ask first. “May I?” he said, and Tiko nodded. They shared sweet coconut puffs, and the shiny hat twinkled softly, reminding Silly that patience makes sparkle safer and more fun.
