Eli Versus the Blue Light

When bluish-white beams from scout ships snatch Mother away, Eli escapes and returns to Samantha, Father, and Pip, who wait fearfully for her to come home. After Mother returns at dawn, the family marks shadow paths and follows Eli's careful steps through the shifting sensors to the mothership. Samantha spots a pattern in the sensors' blinking halo slits, and everyone breaks the black clasp, freeing the aliens from its control. The aliens guide the vanished people home, while Eli's family learns to face danger together by noticing, planning, and helping one another.
Samantha traced ship paths in a notebook as three silver ovals crept over town. Porch lights flickered, and neighbors hurried indoors beneath their bluish-white beams. Eli pointed at a huge shadow spreading through the clouds. "That one's bigger than our whole block."
A beam snapped down with a hard hum. At the corner, a person blinked away, leaving the curb empty. Mother grabbed Eli's hand. "Run!" she shouted. The bluish-white light swallowed them before Father could reach them.
Eli and Mother raced along the lonely road beneath the scout ship. Its bluish-white beam swept over the wet pavement, curling away from the road sign's long shadow. "Step where it's dark!" Eli called. Mother darted after him, but the light folded between them and carried her back.
Eli ran home alone, dusty and breathless. Samantha opened the door, and Father pulled him close while Pip barked at the sky. Three scout ships hovered over the rooftops. Father held Eli tight as the family watched, afraid, while Mother was still gone.
At dawn, Mother stumbled through the back door as the beam faded. Samantha shut the curtains. The family laid a chair across the rug and marked safe shadow paths between the bright strips of light. "Dark side first," Eli said. "The beam bends around shadows." He stepped carefully across, and Pip hopped after them.
The mothership door rose higher than any building, its light bending across the ground. Bulb-headed aliens waited with bowed heads as black heat sensors hummed, sweeping the path ahead. Pip barked and dashed sideways. His ears flew up. Eli led everyone through the shifting beams, choosing each shadow-step with care until they reached the towering door.
Inside, Queen Veyra's sensors curled tighter around the family. Samantha opened the notebook and watched the three halo slits blink each time a sensor bent. "There!" Samantha cried. Everyone grabbed the black clasp and yanked. The halo cracked, and the bulb-headed aliens stopped, staring at their own hands.
The freed aliens lowered their sensors and guided vanished people home, past porch steps and flower beds. Mother squeezed Eli's hand while Samantha filled the notebook with new paths leading out. Three scout ships hovered quietly above town. Pip barked once, then trotted through the front door with the family.
