Starring Ella

Ella, whose real name is Penelope, is a wiggly, rosy-cheeked toddler living in New York City who turns every outing with her parents into a grand adventure. When she insists on leading the way through the busy streets, she confidently steers her family in the wrong direction and they end up somewhere unexpected. Through the detour, Penelope discovers something delightful that she never could have planned, and her parents delight in their little navigator's gift for finding magic in wrong turns. The story celebrates curiosity, the joy of getting wonderfully lost together, and the way a two-year-old's impatience can accidentally become the best idea of the day.

Her name is Penelope, but some call her **Ella,** the smallest, most wiggly New York City **fella.** She lives in the city where buildings touch the **sky,** and every single morning she asks, "Where shall we **fly?"**

She drew a little map on a crinkly paper **square,** with squiggly crayon streets going every which **where.** "I know the way!" she told Mama and **Dada.** "I drew it myself—see the star? It says 'ta-**dah!'"**

Out on the sidewalk the city went **roar,** taxis and pigeons and jackhammers and **more.** Penelope pointed her napkin map left with a **shout,** "This way to the park! I have figured it **out!"**

They walked past a bakery smelling of **bread,** turned right when the map clearly said left **instead.** They wound round a corner and over a **hill,** and stopped at a place that was perfectly **still.**

"This is not the park," Dada said with a **frown.** "Your map took us deep to the other side of **town!"** Penelope looked at her napkin, then looked at the **view,** the squiggly red star pointing somewhere she **never** once **knew.**

But Mama gasped softly and pointed up **high,** a garden of flowers stretched under the **sky!** A secret rooftop blooming in **red,** right there where Penelope's wrong map had **led.**

They sat on the stoop while petals came **down,** the most hidden and wonderful spot in the **town.** Penelope laughed and spread her arms **wide,** "I meant to go here!" she announced with great **pride.**

So if you should wander the streets of New **York,** past pigeons that scatter and jackhammers that **torque,** just follow a napkin map, crinkled and **starred—** the bow leads to wonder, not far from your **yard.**
