Sofia and the Secret-Smile Switch

Sofia spotted Benji behind the old oak tree, tossing acorns at a pile of backpacks. As she watched, Benji scowled and muttered to himself, sounding grumpy and alone. Sofia walked over and smiled kindly. She said, “Why do you want to throw acorns, Benji? Don’t your hands get sore after a while?”
Benji shrugged, dropping the acorn. “’Cause it’s funny,” he said, but his voice sounded unsure. Sofia sat beside him and quietly asked, “Do you ever laugh at jokes that make everyone happy—especially yourself?” Benji stared at the grass, fidgeting with his sleeves, not answering for a moment. The breeze smelled like fresh cut grass and warm earth.
Finally, Benji mumbled, “Maybe I just don’t know how.” Sofia reached over and offered him a dandelion puff. “What if we try together?” she said with a twinkle in her eye. Benji watched the white fluff wobble in her hand, looking surprised. There was a gentle hopefulness in the air as birds chirped softly above.
Benji puffed on the dandelion, sending seeds spinning into the breeze. He giggled, a real giggle, and looked at Sofia with wide, grateful eyes. Sofia smiled back, saying, “Isn’t laughing together more fun than being alone and grumpy?” Benji nodded, and together, they watched the seeds dance on the wind, feeling brave and not-so-alone.
