A Day at Happy Hollow with Pa and Grandma cover illustration

Starring Ella, Grandma, Pa

Ella spends a joyful day at Happy Hollow Zoo with her Pa and Grandma, starting with the lemurs and then riding the merry-go-round and Danny the Dragon. She shows growing confidence as she chooses her rides, bravely climbs the tall orange slide, and celebrates making it down safely while Pa worries and Grandma cheers her on. The family ends the day laughing at a puppet show and heading home tired but happy, with Pa carrying Ella and everyone already looking forward to returning. The story celebrates trying new things, trusting yourself, and enjoying time together.

The gates of Happy Hollow Zoo opened wide, and Ella hurried inside with her mustard yellow bow bouncing on her head. “Lemurs first?” she asked. Grandma smiled and opened the zoo map. “That is exactly what I was thinking.” Pa reached for Ella’s hand. “Easy, little one. We have the whole day.” Ella squeezed his fingers. “I know, Pa. But the animals are waiting.”

At the lemur habitat, a black-and-white lemur jumped from one branch to another. Its long striped tail floated behind it like a ribbon. Ella pressed her hands on the railing. “That lemur is fast.” Grandma crouched beside her. “I think it has been practicing.” “I could practice too,” Ella said. Pa adjusted his gray cap. “Lemurs use all four paws to hold on. Very smart.” Ella looked at her hands, then at her feet. “I only have two hands, so I better be extra careful.”

The merry-go-round sparkled with lights. Music played as horses, tigers, rabbits, and bears moved slowly in a circle. Ella pointed to a bright white polar bear. “That one,” she said. “I want the polar bear.” Grandma lifted Ella onto the bear’s back and helped her hold the golden pole. “Ready?” Grandma asked. “Ready,” Ella said. When the music started, the polar bear rose and dipped. Ella laughed and waved to Pa every time she went by. Pa waved back every single time.

Next was Danny the Dragon. Danny was red and gold with a friendly smile and a little track that curved around the ride. Ella walked right up to him. “I’m going on Danny,” she said. Pa blinked. “Just like that?” Grandma patted his arm. “She knows what she wants.” The ride began to move. Ella sat tall in her seat and waved each time Danny came around the bend. “Hi, Pa! Hi, Grandma!” By the fourth lap, Pa was laughing too.

Then Ella saw the big orange slide. It stood at the top of a small hill, with a long swooping curve at the bottom. Ella started climbing the steps. Pa stepped closer. “Careful, Ella. That one is pretty high. Hold the rail, okay?” Ella stopped and looked down at him. “I am holding it, Pa.” Pa nodded, but his face still looked worried. Ella climbed to the top, sat down, tucked her hands safely in her lap, and took one big breath.

Ella pushed off. Down she went, fast and smooth, her bow tipping sideways as she slid around the curve. She landed at the bottom with a soft bump. For one second, she sat still. Then she jumped up. “I did it!” Pa hurried over and opened his arms. “You sure did.” He hugged her tight. Grandma clapped. “That was excellent sliding.” Then Grandma looked up at the slide. “My turn,” she said. Pa stared at her. “You are serious?” Grandma was already walking to the steps.

After the slide, they found three seats in the front row for the puppet show. The curtain wiggled open. A silly crocodile puppet snapped at a tiny fish and missed every time. Ella laughed so hard she leaned into Grandma’s side. “He is never going to catch that fish,” Ella said. Grandma whispered, “That fish is much too clever.” Pa looked at Grandma smiling, then at Ella giggling, and felt his heart get very full. He pulled his cap down just a little.

By the time they reached the car, the sun was low and orange. Ella was too tired to walk, so Pa carried her. Her arms rested around his neck, and her yellow bow had slipped to one side. “Was it a good day?” Pa asked softly. Ella nodded. “A really good day.” Grandma smiled. “Next time, I am going down that slide first.” Pa closed his eyes. “Of course you are.” Ella smiled sleepily. And Happy Hollow felt like a place they would visit again and again.
